Overview
The Canton of Zürich is located in the northeast of Switzerland and, with around 1.6 million residents (2023), is the most populous canton. The city of Zürich is the cantonal capital and serves as the seat of government, parliament, and the high court.
Zürich is widely regarded as Switzerland’s economic powerhouse, known for its dynamic economy, world-class financial sector, and excellent quality of life.
Economic Strengths & Infrastructure
✔ GDP: CHF 164 billion (2022), the highest among all Swiss cantons, with GDP per capita at CHF 104,620.
✔ Financial & Insurance Hub: Home to global giants like UBS, Credit Suisse, and Zurich Insurance — Zürich competes with London and Frankfurt as a top financial center.
✔ Innovation Clusters: Strong presence in life sciences, medtech, biotech, IT, and fintech; the Greater Zurich Area attracts multinationals and start-ups alike.
✔ Education & Research: World-renowned institutions such as ETH Zürich, University of Zürich, ZHAW, and ZHdK provide access to top talent and cutting-edge research.
✔ Transport & Connectivity: Zürich Airport is Switzerland’s largest international hub; the city also boasts a major railway station and excellent motorway connections.
Taxation
Legal entities: Legal entities are subject to a corporate income tax at the tax rate of 19.7% (city of Zurich) and capital tax of 0.17% on taxable equity. Dividend income and capital gains from qualifying participations are exempted from corporate tax due to the participation exemption.
Individuals: Individuals are subject to progressive income tax with the top effective tax rate of 33% in Kilchberg and 39% in Zurich. Private capital gains are tax exempt and dividends from qualifying participations are taxed with a discount of 50% at the cantonal and 30% at the federal level. Therefore, depending on the income structure, the effective tax rate may be significantly lower than the top effective tax rate.
